Changing Hair Colour

CHANGING HAIR COLOUR

The only problem with some of the excellent hair models out there is that there is no easy way to change the hair colour. However, the Poser 5 material room gives us a variety of ways we can alter hair colour, without needing to change the original hair textures at all.

The key to this is the add node.

  1. Create your maths node, and plug the hair texture into Value_1. This will get you a dullish greyscale.
  2. Change Value_1 to '2'. This will give you a much brighter greyscale.
  3. Plug the add node into the Diffuse colour for the hair.
  4. Change the Diffuse colour to whatever hair colour you require.
This is the easy bit. If your hair only has a single material, then you are finished. If the hair has several materials, but they all use the same settings, then copy all the nodes and apply them to every material. Finally, in the worst case, your hair will have several different meterials using different texture maps. In these cases, you will need to repeat the above sequence for each different map.

Varients

To get more details control over the eventual colour, plug the output of the Add node into the Input node of a ColorRamp node. Set Color1 to black, and experiment with the other three colours. One use would be to set Color4 to a highlight colour, while Color2 and Color3 are set to shades of the main hair colour. By playing with the value of the Add node, you can alter the level of each colour in the eventual hair.
