MATHS: SMOOTHSTEP

This function is suposed to return Value_1 bicubically smoothed. Amongst other things, bicubic smoothing is a method used to change the size of a bitmapped picture while maintaining as high a quality as possible.

In Poser the Smoothstep function does none of this. It produces almost exactly the same result as the Gain function with value_2 set to 0.68 (there are minute differences, but they are only visible when you magnify them many times. It makes no difference to the smoothness of textures, either small textures used on large objects, or large textures views from close up.

I'd suggest you use Gain in every case where you might consider SmoothStep. You never know when you might want to fine tune the results, and with SmoothStep you have no control.
