Grouping Tool: Create Prop

Grouping Tool: Create Prop

Create Prop takes the current group and turns it into a separate prop. It can be used on props or on figures. This can have all sorts of uses. Here we will create a letter H prop.

  1. Select the prop or figure you wish to create a prop from. Here I am using the Hi-res square primitive.
  2. Create a new group. Don't worry about the name - you'll probably not be saving this modified prop anyway!
  3. Select the polygons you want in your new prop.
  4. Click on Create Prop.
  5. You will now be asked what name to give your new prop. This time, use a meaningful name.
  6. If your new prop is what you want, then save it to your prop library.

Fig 1: A new group

This new prop will behave like any other prop. It inherits any material groups and settings present in the original prop (even if that material isn't actually on your new prop).

Fig 2: A created prop

Figure 2 shows the new prop ready to use in your scenes.

Suggested Uses

Create a simple mask by created a group on the face of your figure.

Make simple props by cutting shapes out of the primitives

Split existing single props into their component parts to gain more flexibility. Got a building model with static doors? Create a new prop based on the door and another one based on everything else - instant opening door!

Limits

The create prop tool has the same limit as all other grouping tools. If the polygons in the original model aren't the shape you want, then you can't do anything about it.
